For this MMT Chat: 5 in 5—that’s 5 best practices in five minutes on ways to improve efficiencies—I chat with Charles Daniels Chief Financial Officer for Wepco Plastics in Middlefield, Connecticut. He is also one of MMT’s Editorial Advisory Board members.

Here are his five quick answers in a nutshell (watch the quick 5-minute video for his full answers):

  1. How do you create and maintain an employee-centered culture?

Daniels: You have to live by core values and you have to treat it like any other relationship or living organism.  You have to nurture it and constantly work on every day.

  1. What are your top three best technology investments and why?

Daniels Power BI, which is a business intelligence software that we're just starting to use, it really lets you extract and visualize data; a social media posting platform that also comes with analytics, and a really good camera.

  1. What is your, what is your latest process improvement?

Daniels That's hard because we really are making process changes every day. Simple changes that save time throughout the day and make you more efficient. Continuous improvement.

  1. Number four, how do you measure success?

Daniels You have to have metrics on everything that is important to you—employee relations, customer relations, profitability, impact on social media, impact on your community, etc.

  1. How do you stay competitive?

Daniels: We're always looking for trends. We thrive with change management, and we have a core value of never stop improving, and we really try to live that every single day. We never sit still.
