For this MMT Chat: 5 in 5—that’s 5 best practices in five minutes on ways to improve efficiencies—I chat with James Jergens, the Operations Manager for Ernie Green Industries out of Rochester, New York (and one of MMT’s newer Editorial Advisory Board members).
Here are his five quick answers in a nutshell (watch the quick 5-minute video for her full answers):
- How do you create and maintain an employee-centered culture?
We make sure that we treated each person with dignity and respect, so we listen to them. When they have a problem, we'll talk with them about it.
- What are your top three best technology, investments, and why?
My number one is training, investment and my staff, making sure that they have all the skills, that they need to run the equipment, and then when we do buy.
- What is your latest process improvement?
We just put in something in place this week, and that was our work order process. We have a list of our work orders that we have to complete through the shop. We also have a shipping log. We’ve combined them together.
- How do you measure success?
We track sample success. We track the development phase, and then also track the quality phase, and drive the root cause when we have an issue. Next is on time delivery, the mold completion. And did we stay within budget.
- How do you stay competitive?
First and foremost, it's solving problems for our customers.
