Here are two MoldMaking Conference sessions you won’t want to miss:

Hybrid Tooling Inserts: Subtractive & Additive Manufacturing

  • David Myers, Senior Business Development Executive, Linear AMS, A Shapeways Company

With almost 20 years of experience designing and additively manufacturing core and cavity inserts, lifters and slides for injection and compression molds, the Linear AMS team has developed some strong preferences and innovative techniques to capitalize on the benefits of both additive and subtractive manufacturing. The team has developed a hybrid approach to producing mold inserts using DMLS printers and designing and printing each component to reduce internal stresses. Linear also works closely with the moldmaker at the front end of the design process to address these concerns by identifying the best part orientation on the build plate during the grow stage. Come to this session to learn some 3D printing best practices for producing hybrid tool inserts via recent real-world applications examples.

Metal 3D Printing that Makes Dollars and Sense for the Plastics and Tooling Industries

  • Eddie Graff, Lead Manufacturing Engineer, Westminster Tool
  • Eric Derner, Technical Sales and Application Engineer, Nicolet Plastics
  • Scott Kramer, Senior Applications Engineer, Mantle

Metal 3D printing has often been presented as a solution to the many challenges of production tooling, long lead times, high costs and highly skilled and difficult-to-source labor, but it generally has failed to add value outside of conformal cooling applications. This panel discussion will review the current state of 3D printing of tooling and share the personal experiences of a mold builder and a production injection molder who are successfully utilizing metal 3D printing.
