Wire-Laser Deposition Meets Automation for Standardized 3D Printing Workcell
Meltio, FANUC and Accufacture introduce Alchemist 1, a preconfigured solution highly applicable to moldmaking that is meant to expand the horizons of metal 3D printing.
Wire-laser metal deposition systems company Meltio introduces Alchemist 1 to North American customers, an all-in-on additive manufacturing robotic workcell developed in collaboration with automation companies Accufacture and FANUC. Engineered for seamless integration and rapid deployment, Alchemist 1 is applicable across myriad industries, including mold and die.
Powered by Meltio’s wire-laser metal deposition (W-LMD) technology, Alchemist 1 delivers cost-effective production of large, fully dense metal parts. It boasts an array of key features, including a deposition rate of up to 1 kg/hr, a spacious build volume of 3.2' × 6.5' × 3.2' and compatibility with inexpensive welding wire feedstock, all to enhance performance and affordability.
W-LMD is combined with FANUC’s six-axis robot and two-axis positioner within a laser-safe enclosure. Furthermore, the system comes complete with a complimentary Meltio Space robotic slicer license, though customers have the flexibility to use other slicer technologies as well.
“Our machines are very well suited for the production of injection molds as well as many other types of tools and inserts due to their ability to combine the typical advantages of metal additive manufacturing (conformal cooling channels, reduction in lead time) with a much more cost-effective and faster process without sacrificing part quality,” notes Lukas Hoppe, Meltio R&D director. “In addition, the advanced multi-material printing capability can be used to apply harder wearing materials in certain sections of the mold, while better thermal conductors may be used for other areas to maximize performance. Lastly the process may also be used to repair or modify existing molds with reduced deformation due to the low heat input.”
