St. Paul Engraving is showcasing laser texturing, engraving and micromachining capabilities via its five-axis laser technologies at Amerimold 2021. In particular, the company highlights its use of flexible pulse sources for improved surface finishes and Z-focus shifters to reduce machining time.
St. Paul Engraving’s Z-focus shifter technology, combined with a high-speed 3D scanning system, is said to enable the reduction of machining time by up to 40% depending on the application. To achieve this, the Z-focus shifter alters the beam so it matches the contour of the mold, eliminating the need for the machine axis to move. This reportedly reduces the number of machine positions to complete a project while increasing the patch size simultaneously.
The Z-focus shifter paired with dual flexi-pulse sources, St. Paul Engraving says, also adds a new level of quality to laser texturing, engraving and micromachining that was not previously attainable. Flexi-pulse sources have the ability to adjust the pulse duration from 4-200 microseconds for greater surface finish control while minimizing burr or recast and reducing micro fracturing, an ideal option for medical and optical components. Further, the company notes that having dual sources allows for the ability to switch between a 100-watt source and 30-watt source to achieve unprecedented surface finishes without compromising on time or quality.
Overall, this process is said to be clean, highly repeatable and permits new and virtually limitless design possibilities not previously achievable through traditional techniques.
