According to Precision Laser Technology (PLT), its utilization of laser texturing technology has surpassed traditional chemical methods for etching plastic injection molds. Five-axis mobility and digital interface improve the versatility for pattern designs, accuracy within mold placement and repeatability for multi-cavitation tools. Textures range from industry-standard VDI and matte finishes, to custom-designed 3D patterns.
More specifically, PLT’s five-axis laser technology gives the company the ability to replicate Charmilles EDM finishes and chemically induced matte finishes for the purpose of producing a surface roughness or gloss reduction on a molded part. PLT also works with gray scale imagery in order to custom design patterns, or generate them from a high-resolution scan. Scans of flat swatches are processed at 1,700 dpi resolution and extended by digital stitching for expanded mold coverage.
Overall, PLT acknowledges that the advancement of lasers has extended texture capabilities to the reproduction of functional micro-structures within molds, allowing molded parts to diffuse light reflection, increase flow rate or stimulate tactile senses. Exclusively digital, laser texturing is the premier technology for directional grains, geometric patterns and custom-designed surface finishes.
