Once you acknowledge the importance of detecting errors early in the design process, you can begin to look for technology to help you accomplish that goal.  That is exactly what Versatile Mold and Design did when it started using a laser scanner and inspection software to verify its carbon electrodes. The company verifies the correctness of an injection mold before any steel is cut.

According to Versatile it uses a 3D  laser scanning system (accurate to 0.011mm) to verify each carbon electrode before wasting a block of steel. The electrode is scanned and compared with the CAD model, complete with exacting burn allowance, draft and all features. This process also works for First Article Inspection from the tool to speed time to market.

Another advantage of using this process is being able to ensure that for multiple cavities each set of electrodes matches. Just scan each set and compare the two scans using inspection software. By using  reverse engineering software, changes in the mold can also be quickly done with a modified CAD model of the changed electrode complete and verified.   Versatile credits Laser Design and Geomagic software for its success.
