Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced that Canada will impose a 100% tariff on Chinese-made electric vehicles (EVs), effective October 1. This move, mirroring a U.S. initiative, aims to protect Canada's domestic EV industry from unfair competition with state-subsidized Chinese vehicles. The tariff will cover various vehicle types, including passenger cars, trucks, buses, and delivery vans.

Trudeau highlighted that the decision was made to "level the playing field" for Canadian workers, particularly in the auto and metal industries. Additionally, a 25% surtax on Chinese steel and aluminum imports will take effect on October 15.

The announcement sparked mixed reactions. Advocates of the Canadian automotive industry, like Flavio Volpe, praised the government for protecting local jobs. However, some climate activists expressed concerns, arguing that the tariffs could limit access to affordable EVs, slowing the country's shift to carbon-neutral transportation.

Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland defended the decision, criticizing China’s labor and environmental practices, stating that Canada's EV strategy would not rely on products from such industries. The Chinese government has voiced strong opposition to the tariffs, warning of potential consequences.
