Last week I attended a press event for Hyundai WIA during IMTS that I thought was going to be a review of a new machine the company was debuting at the show, but instead was witness to a generous technology donation to a deserving school. October 5th has been dubbed Manufacturing Day and it was established to help improve the general public's perception of manufacturing--its careers and value to the U.S. economy. This day is set up for students, parents, educators, media, customers, suppliers and the community who will learn about real career opportunities, training and resources. MMT TV Time at IMTS
MoldMaking Technology was given some TV time during IMTS on Wednesday. IMTS.tv grabbed me on the show floor to discuss the moldmaking industry, business conditions, future outlook, the magazine's mission and what specific technologies being showcased last week are targeted for mold manufacture. Minus the screen time on my mug, it was a great opportunity for me to promote moldmaking at this mammoth event.

A live demonstration of embracing both subtractive and additive manufacturing was one of the highlights for me at IMTS. Machine tool builder GF AgieCharmilles and EOS showcased an innovative start-to-finish manufacturing process chain that creates actual titanium tibial trays for surgical knee implants.

The highest-level class in his school's vocational manufacturing program takes on contract machining work from commercial customers. A class full of students making actual, sellable, end-use parts. A student-run job shop located on school grounds. What a brilliant way to teach AND help fund the school’s program.

Cavalier Tool Tells Its Story at IMTS
Cavalier Tool & Manufacturing Ltd. of Windsor, Ontario, explained on Monday during Makino's Lunch & Learn how it handles drilling, boring, thread milling, tapping, 2-D and 3-D machining without the operator ever touching the part. Cavalier Tool believes that technology is increasing at a tremendous rate, which demands that they keep up with the latest innovations, and in order to do this they developed an in-house program that continuously analyzes their current technology, makes recommendations based on the current technology and replaces older equipment with newer, faster automated machinery. On average, three to four pieces of equipment are replaced annually through this program.

New Tooling Forum Established
The Original Equipment Suppliers Association has formed a Tooling Group to provide a forum for tool makers (tool and die fabricators as well as fixtures and gauges) to discuss industry issues, share best practice information, work together to solve issues that affect the entire value chain.

MoldMakers Giving Back
Since I began covering moldmaking 15 years ago, I've discovered two very important characteristics of the men and women who make up this industry--besides their craftsmanship and technology know-how--passion and generosity. And here is just one current example of those qualities. Westminster Tool has contributed $30,000 to fund and support the new Manufacturing Technology Center at Quinebaug Valley Community College.
