At the Mold-Masters Booth, F&S Tool (Erie, PA) ran a mold they designed and built for Mold-Masters' new IRIS co-injection technology. For product protection and long shelf life, food and beverage containers can require barriers, which are created using glass, metal or plastic, with liners or multiple layers. Co-injection technology is an alternative to these, and it helps with cost reduction through consolidating parts, enhancing product performance and reducing part weights. The F&S 16-cavity mold on display produced a tamper-evident, linerless, hot fill HDPE cap for a beverage container with an integrated oxygen and CO2 barrier; and, incorporated a patent-pending cooling system. It also produced co-injected parts within designated tolerances, with near perfect threads at a cycle time of 4.2 seconds.
