Penn State Behrend will host a comprehensive 2.5-day seminar on injection mold design principles from July 31 to August 2, 2024. The seminar, led by Nick Vitelli, lecturer in engineering in the Plastics Engineering Technology and Polymer Engineering Science programs, aims to provide participants with a fundamental understanding of crucial aspects of mold engineering.

This seminar offers a thorough review of the fundamental mold design requirements and concentrates on the design elements that are necessary to produce a sound operational injection mold.

It is designed for a wide range of professionals in the plastics industry, including molding engineers, project engineers, mold designers, quality assurance staff, and others involved with mold production. Supervisors and upper-level management are also encouraged to attend.

Key topics to be covered include:

  1. Tolerances in mold and part design
  2. Mold steels and material selection
  3. Mold bases and layout
  4. Mold strength and ejection systems
  5. Cooling principles and designs
  6. Gating types and selection
  7. Hot runner systems
  8. Venting techniques
  9. Solid modeling in mold design
  10. Computer-aided engineering (CAE) applications

Participants will gain valuable insights into the effects of material types on design, as well as a comprehensive understanding of runners, gates, vents, and ejection systems. The seminar will also cover emerging technologies in mold design and CAE applications for optimizing flow and cooling analysis.
