Video: Working On and In An Apprenticeship Program
Christina Fuges and Ryan Delahanty chat with Edro Engineering and Specialty Steels about apprenticeship and training in the virtual video series “What's New and What Works in Mold Manufacturing.”
MoldMaking Technology Editorial Director Christina Fuges sits down virtually with co-host Ryan Delahanty, publisher of MMT, and several guests in the moldmaking industry to discuss hot topics, trends and challenges in the hopes of leaving a few tips and strategies. Our guests in this session are Nick Carroll in sales, Rob Curran in metallurgy and Mike Guscott who was (and is) instrumental in Nick and Rob’s training, all moldmaking professionals from Edro Engineering and Specialty Steels in Pennsylvania.
“Many groups working on workforce development are working on apprenticeship programs, starting and stopping along the way. Edro took a step back and realized what the challenges were in their business and put a plan together and executed the plan. So today we're going to hear about that plan and we're going to learn about how it's growing. It might be a model for companies to look at and think about how they partner with universities and go through developing that programming,” says Moldmaking Technology Publisher Ryan Delahanty.
Some key highlights to tune into when watching this session:
- “When you're coming into moldmaking fresh with no experience, and really not knowing the industry, it's intimidating. The Edro program goes through the full process and learn our materials, learn how the business side works, and then explore the different customers and see how they run their businesses to so it was really kind of going step by step and letting us go at our pace and kind of develop this program with different trainings and really feel comfortable that way.”
- It takes time to build up an experience backlog that you can draw from and then also use your knowledge that you picked up at university.
- “It's [about] thinking outside the box with with the tools you already have.”
Taken from the 2020 MMT IMTS Spark video series “What’s New and What Works in Mold Manufacturing,” this video session is number two of six sessions presented by Mobikin Technology on the IMTS Spark platform.
